Once, Twice, Three Times A President

As expected, President Leonel Fernández won a clear first-round election victory on May 16 on the back of the incumbent's credentials in reviving the Dominican Republic's economy in recent years. However, we believe that food and energy prices, along with slowing economic growth in the US, threaten to undermine the government's fiscal position going forward. The president's pledges for a 'social pact' may come at too high a price and jeopardise the pending stand-by arrangement with the IMF.
