Congress Leader Suspended
June 2008 | Ratings UpdateThe ruling Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) temporarily suspended congress leader Eduardo Meyer at the beginning of June, pending the outcome of corruption allegations filed against him. Meyer has been accused of the illicit transfer of US$10.9mn of state funds; a claim that is proving a headache for President Álvaro Colom. With the opposition Gran Alianza Nacional (GANA) - and some members of the UNE - demanding Meyer's resignation, we believe that the president could face intense political pressure to act going forward.
