Brazil's year-to-date (ytd) merchandise trade surplus narrowed to US$4.6bn in the four months ending April, compared to US$12.9bn during the same period in 2007 and US$12.4bn during the same period in 2006. We note that a substantial rise in imports has been the main driver, with ytd imports accumulating to US$48.2bn in the first four months of the year, compared to US$33.5bn during the same period in 2007.
