Anti-Crime Agreement Signed With Suriname
June 2008 | Ratings UpdateGuyana's Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, and Suriname's Minister of Justice and Police, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, have signed a bilateral agreement aimed at closer cooperation in tackling crime and shared security threats. The first such agreement signed at ministerial level between the two countries, the agreement covers areas such as trans-national crimes, money-laundering, trafficking of illegal fire-arms and drugs, smuggling, trafficking in persons, piracy and violent crimes. Communication and intelligence-sharing are also to be enhanced, as well as an annual programme of talks. That the two neighbours face very similar challenges, greater mutual assistance could portend an improvement in Guyana's security situation going forward.
