Improving Relations With Neighbours?
June 2008 | Political Risk AnalysisColombia's risky incursion into Ecuadorian territory on March 1 resulted in the death of over 20 members of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), including Raúl Reyes, the paramilitary group's second-in-command. Despite this success, the incursion provoked condemnation from both Ecuador and Venezuela, leading to a diplomatic breakdown. However, with Colombia and Ecuador accepting recommendations by the Organisation of American States (OAS) on June 3 for improved bilateral dialogue, and Colombian and Venezuelan foreign ministers meeting the same day to discuss border security, bilateral trade and even the sensitive issue links between Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and the FARC leadership, frosty relations appear to be thawing.
