PRI To Hold Up Energy Reform
June 2008 | Ratings UpdateDespite the confidence of Pemex chief executive Jésus Reyes Heroles that oil sector proposed reforms will be passed through congress before September, recent comments by the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) show their support of the reforms is by no means guaranteed. As the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) is opposed to any liberalisation of Pemex, President Felipe Calderón's government is reliant on PRI support to ensure success of the oil bill. With the PRI demanding substantial changes to the bill before the party will support it, Calderón still faces a battle to push through even limited reforms to the ailing domestic oil industry.
