May 2008 | Risk SummaryHigh food prices, scarce supplies, a restless population, and a series of riots shook Haiti in April, forcing President Rene Preval to accept the dismissal of his Prime Minister, Jacques-Edouard Alexis, and to replace him with Ericq Pierre, a former official at the Inter American Development Bank (IADB). The transition was far from smooth, however. The Senate dismissed Alexis on April 12, blaming him for food riots that left six people dead, including a UN peacekeeper.
