May 2008 | Macroeconomic ForecastsThe Dominican Republic's economy is growing increasingly dependent on its tourism industry, as for the first time remittance flows were outstripped by the rapidly rising oil import bill, which according to official estimates is expected to exceed US$4.5bn this year. We are concerned that the problem is likely to be exacerbated as the effects of a prospective US recession will see a dip in remittance flows over the coming months.
