Correa's Mixed Messages On FARC
May 2008 | Ratings UpdateWith confrontational rhetoric continuing from President Rafael Correa, suggestions of a warming of relations with neighbouring Colombia following the incursion of Colombian troops on March 1 have not been realised. Correa vocally resents the charges by Colombian counterpart Álvaro Uribe that Ecuador has been complacent in allowing the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) terrorist group to operate on Ecuadorian soil. Indeed, the Ecuadorian authorities have allegedly been stepping up operations against the group and Correa has warned that any rebel incursion into Ecuador would be considered 'an act of war'. However, he has since declared his willingness to recognise the FARC as legitimate combatants if they cease terrorist activities.
