FARC Ties Lost

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has claimed that his government has lost contact with the Colombian paramilitary group the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) after securing the release of six hostages last year. His comments come in defence of allegations made by Colombian President Álvaro Uribe that Caracas has been providing financial and technical support for the guerrilla group. Regional tensions have remained icy following an Andean conflict in March in which Colombian armed forces crossed the Ecuadorean border to assassinate a top FARC leader.
