Election Race On
April 2008 | Ratings UpdateWith the ballot scheduled for May next year, Panama's election contest is finely balanced. Hot on the heels of becoming party president of the ruling Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), Housing Minister Balbina Herrera has announced her intentions to stand for Panama's top post. However, she could face a formidable foe from within the PRD, current Panama City Mayor Juan Carlos Navarro, who allegedly has the support of President Martín Torrijos. Whichever PRD pretender comes out on top will be up against Ricardo Martinelli of the opposition Cambio Democrático, who is leading in (albeit volatile) pre-election opinion polling.
