Colombian Intrigue
April 2008 | Ratings UpdateCosta Rican Security Minister Fernando Berrocal resigned his post by 'mutual agreement' with President Óscar Arias on March 30, two weeks after he created a political firestorm by claiming that Costa Rican politicians had links with Colombian paramilitary group FARC. This claim emerged after hundreds of thousands of US dollars were discovered in a house in Costa Rica that was allegedly linked to FARC leadership. A subsequent investigation, with the help of the Colombian government, turned up no links with Costa Rican politicians - surely good news for Arias, given the diplomatic and political headaches that would have entailed.
