A week after he was dismissed from his post by President Álvaro Colom, former Interior Ministry adviser Victor Rivera was killed in his home, by gangsters, it is suspected. Local authorities believe that the motive was revenge, as the interior ministry had cracked down hard on kidnapping gangs, while critics of Rivera claim that he had links to death squads. The police, however, said that they have no evidence as to who committed the murder. The episode is another reminder of the degree to which criminal organisations have pervaded Guatemala's political
