Agreement On US FTA Looking Less Likely

BMI View: As we have noted previously, we are becoming less optimistic of any progress on a free trade agreement (FTA) being ratified by the US Congress this year. The Bush administration is strongly in favour of ratifying the US-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement as it was originally named. However, the window of opportunity for the administration is closing, with anti-free trade sentiment swelling as the US presidential election in November draws nearer, and Colombia's long-term economic development risks getting held up by US domestic politics.
