Attack On Military

Having accused the armed forces of being infiltrated by Colombia and the US Central Intelligence Agency, President Rafael Correa fired the country's defence minister in early April, Wellington Sandoval, having sacked the head of army intelligence the previous week. Putting the armed forces under increased scrutiny following the Colombian raid into Ecuadorian territory killing an Ecuadorian national, Correa has installed his former private secretary, Javier Ponce, to the defence post. While Ponce has insisted that his only agenda is to make the relationship between the military and civil society more transparent, in response to such criticism, Ecuador's top four military commanders submitted their resignation to the president.
