Curaçao Opposition Cries Foul

Six opposition parties organised a protest demonstration in Willemstad, capital of Curaçao, the largest of the five islands making up the Netherlands Antilles on March 1, involving over 1,000 people. They objected to the way they said the government of Emily de Jonghe-Elhage was planning to re-structure constitutional relations with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and warned that it was handing areas of Curacao's sovereignty back to The Hague without proper consultation. The context was the decision in a 2005 referendum by which St Maarten and Curaçao opted to follow Aruba to become autonomous nations within the Dutch Kingdom. The
