Ethnic Tension And Crime Prevention

February 2008 | Political Risk Analysis

BMI View: In the wake of the massacre of 11 civilians at Lusignan and the ensuing ethnically-charged political in-fighting, we have revised down our long-term political ratings for Guyana from 53.3 to 51.8. Our short-term ratings, however, had already priced in the immediate and ongoing threats to security and public unrest and so remain unchanged, as we are not expecting any significant increase in violent crime or domestic terrorist attacks as a result of the event or the government's response and potential increase in ethnic tension.
