To Stand Or Not To Stand

The ruling Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) held an internal election on March 9 in order to choose its national executive committee. While the final results have not been confirmed, Balbina Herrera looks to have comfortably beaten off opposition from Ernesto Balladares to secure the position of PRD president. Following this victory, Balbina could now be tempted to stand in Panama's leadership contest, with the presidential elections pencilled in for next year. That said, Herrera continues to insist that her political ambitions are, for the time being, focussed on becoming major of Panama City, not president.
