Constitution Consultation Launched

The Cayman Islands government published a summary of its constitutional reform proposals in mid January, initiating a period of public consultations. The ruling Peoples' Progressive Movement (PPM) said the aim was to have a period of debate and discussion, prior to formulating definitive proposals to modernise and update the constitution, which would be put to a referendum in May. The new document would then have to be negotiated with the UK. The proposals assume that the islands will remain an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.
