No Clear Frontrunner

The outlook for Puerto Rico's gubernatorial election, scheduled for November 2008, remains extremely clouded. The political arena has been traditionally dominated by the 'big three', namely, the pro-commonwealth Partido Popular Democrático (PPD), the pro-statehood Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP) and the pro-independence Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP), although the recent certification of Partido Puertorriqueños por Puerto Rico (PPR) could throw a spanner into the works. We expect the issues of statehood, economic growth, and high inflation to remain high on the political agenda.
