December 2007 | Political Risk AnalysisBMI View: With the official results now out, the substantial victory of President Rafael Correa's Alianza Pais party (PSP) has given him the strength and momentum to press ahead with his leftist agenda. The assembly has already begun to review the country's constitution which could see the opposition-dominated Congress shut down and his presidential term extended. We think that the emasculation of government institutions and the consolidation of power in the presidency may improve short-term stability, but could potentially have disastrous economic and political consequences.
