Problems For The Opposition
February 2008 | Ratings UpdateAlthough newly-installed President Álvaro Colom has had a rough go of it since his January 14 inauguration, the opposition GANA party is having major difficulties as well. On January 23, the party split into two factions over the allocation of legislative positions. There will now be a legal dispute over which faction gets to retain the party's official status and name. This is significant, as GANA had the second-largest number of seats in congress (37 of 158), and the further fragmentation of an already fractured congress will make the passage of any legislation even
