Massacre Underlines Security Risks
February 2008 | Ratings UpdateGuyana was shocked by the killing of 11 people in the small coastal village of Lusignan in January. Coming hours after gunmen attacked police headquarters in Georgetown, the atrocity sparked widespread demonstrations, protesting at the lack of government progress in tackling violent crime and the drug-smuggling that encourages it. With the criminals of African descent and the victims from the Indian community, the attack also highlights the ongoing ethnic tension in the country.
