Republic Referendum Postponed

February 2008 | Ratings Update

Although postponed, a constitutional referendum on whether or not to sever links with the British monarchy to become a republic is still on the cards. The public last voted on the issue in 2005, when the Trinidad and Tobago-based Caribbean Court of Justice replaced the UK Privy Council as the final court of appeal. Even if the move is supported, we expect the diplomatic implications to be negligible as the island would surely remain a member of the Commonwealth and maintain strong diplomatic relations with with Britain.
