February 2008 | Ratings UpdateIn a direct challenge to the popularity of President Rafael Correa, the mayor of Guayaquil, Jaime Nebot, drew a 40,000-strong crowd for a street march only a week after the president held one of his own. Despite confirming himself as the principal opposition, the mayor will almost certainly not stand in the presidential elections pencilled for October, having twice been unsuccessful. Aside from not commanding a national support base, he will remain more influential as mayor of the country's most populous city, resisting Correa's determination to centralise power.
