As we went to press, we expected the January 15 presidential election to be a very closely fought affair, with the latest opinion polls showing no clear front-runner. The opposition Democratic Labour Party (DLP), led by David Thompson is looking to end three consecutive terms by the Barbados Labour Party (BLP). Tensions have been aloft in January, with BLP leader Owen Arthur openly accusing the Taiwanese government of funding the DLP's election campaign, claiming that the opposition plans to switch diplomatic relations from China to Taiwan if they win the election. We believe the odds favour a fourth consecutive term
