Governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá has dismissed the focus of Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP) candidate Luis Fortuño's electoral campaign as outdated politics. Vilá was specifically referring to an advertisement in which the pro-statehood Fortuño promises to stop 'the separatist threat of this government that allows extremists to threaten our union with the United States'. The issue of the Commonwealth's status will remain the hottest topic of debate ahead of the gubernatorial elections this year, in our view. Moreover, the results of the elections could give a clear indication as to any future referendum result on statehood.
