Peruvian President Alan García reshuffled his cabinet in December for the first time since coming to power in July 2006. García replaced six of his 15 cabinet ministers, with the most noteworthy change was the appointment of Defence Minister Antero Flores Aráoz, a former president of the conservative Partido Popular Cristiano (PPC). We see this as a strategic move to help secure support in congress from the Unidad Nacional (UN) coalition, of which the PPC forms a part, and reduce the need for support from the Fujimoristas given the uncertainty surrounding the Alberto Fujimori trial.
