January 2008 | Macroeconomic ForecastsBMI View: The double impact of a softening global economy and robust commodity prices in 2008 will be less forgiving for the smaller rated economies in our Sovereign Risk Ratings. This is particularly true of Panama (currently rated D+3). The country suffers from a relatively high current account deficit (at an estimated 7.3% of GDP in 2007) and external debt to GDP ratio (at approximately 50% last year).
