The Panamanian political scene is likely to see the formal introduction of a new political party in the near future. In early November, a group including students and labour unions filed papers with the national electoral commission to create the Partido Alternativa Popular (PAP), whose intention is to offer a collective voice to the leftist end of the political spectrum in Panama. It is too early to tell whether the PAP is in a position to be a serious challenge to President Martin Torrijos and his allies at the polls.
