Colom Setting Priorities
December 2007 | Ratings UpdateFurther to our story last month, in which we made clear that the biggest task facing president-elect Álvaro Colom was the country's crime problem, we would like to add two more priorities that Colom himself has singled out: the taxation system and the national energy infrastructure. On the former, a European Union delegation advised Colom that improving tax collection will be necessary to achieve higher levels of social spending without reliance on external assistance - a stance with which we agree. On the latter, Colom has indicated that he would lower taxes on fuel in order to reduce consumer costs,
