President Daniel Ortega's party (FSLN) and former president Arnoldo Aléman's Liberal Constitution Party (PLC) have suggested the use of a popular referendum to decide whether the country should go ahead with political reform. The reform would see the creation of a parliamentary system which would force the president to share power with a prime minister. Furthermore, the president could seek re-election and all former presidents (after 1979) would hold life-long posts as deputies.
