The conflicting ideals between the residents of Santa Cruz and President Evo Morales' government continue to manifest themselves in the form of violent protests. October saw a number of demonstrations including one led by thousands of residents who seized Bolivia's busiest airport from soldiers sent by Morales. Airport workers, who had demanded the cargo handling fees that are paid monthly to the national airport authority, had threatened to block flights, which precipitated Morales' sending in troops.
