Embattled War On Drugs
November 2007 | Ratings UpdateConsidered less corrupt than local police, the military has been used to spearhead President Felipe Calderón's war on the drug cartels. One area of growing concern is that of elements of the Mexican military actually aiding drug smugglers at the lawless border. US president George Bush is requesting US$1.4 billion to fund the Merida Initiative to help Mexico battle drug gangs, the first such assistance for ten years. With so much money at stake, failure to cut the ties between the security services and organised crime may risk undermining Calderón's domestic and international
