October 2007 | Ratings UpdateThe absolution of Senate President Renan Calheiros from accusations that he had received bribes from a construction company has left many opposition members discontent, and has weighed on the credibility of the senate in dealing with corruption at the higher echelons of government. Various opposition leaders have threatened to vote against key reforms, which could stall the government's reform agenda. Similarly, the senate came under criticism after six members abstained from the vote on the decision to annul Calheiro's presidency. A continuation of negative news on the political front may lead us to revised Brazil's short-term political risk ratings.
