Uribe On The Defensive

President Álvaro Uribe has turned up the heat on US lawmakers, urging them to continue supporting Colombia's war on drugs and guerrilla violence. Uribe maintained that his government is making progress, despite data suggesting that Plan Colombia is not achieving its objectives. We do not believe that the issue will be resolved until after the US presidential elections take place next year. Even allowing for this delay, a Democratic-led US Congress is unlikely to be wholly supportive of the Uribe administration, given its concerns about human rights violations in the country.
