El Salvador, the only Latin American state with troops in Iraq, hosted a visit by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the end of September. President Tony Saca reiterated that while his country still supported the US efforts in Iraq, he still intended to withdraw the 280 soldiers serving there as 'the situation in Iraq improves'.
