In an unlikely turn of events, the Venezuelan foreign ministry issued a statement on October 2 announcing that Venezuelan and US diplomats had held 'very cordial' talks. The potential for progress on this front is highlighted by plans of further discussions, to be held in Venezuela, aimed at improving bilateral relations. This follows the US government's decision to take a more pragmatic approach with Venezuela, possibly due to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's popularity in the region. While this is clearly a positive step for Chávez's administration, we believe relations will remain shaky given the fundamental differences between the two
