September 2007 | Risk SummaryPresident Nicanor Duarte has dismissed the opposition in the run up to the spring 2008 election, after the Concertación Nacional collapsed amid differences over which candidate it would support. In another potentially significant development, former general and aspiring presidential candidate Lino Oviedo was released from prison, and is seeking permission from the Supreme Court to return to politics. While the ruling Partido Colorado (PC) should gain from a once again divided opposition, popular ex-bishop Fernando Lugo remains a credible challenge, and internal divisions in the PC could yet undermine its re-election
