Generous Budget A Vote Winner

In a surprise move, Prime Minister Patrick Manning, who is seeking a third term of office with his ruling People's National Movement (PNM), presented the 2007/2008 budget early on August 20, ahead of the usual September date. Awash with energy revenues, Manning raised the minimum wage and announced hikes in funds allocated towards pensioners, the disabled and those on public assistance. Agriculture and education were also given a hefty boost. A frustrated opposition accused the PM of political gimmickry, but the vote, most likely to be held in late November, is clearly Manning's to lose.
