Chávez To The Rescue?

The political tug-of-war between the government and rebel group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) has yet to result in the release of 45 Colombian hostages, including former presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt. While popular support for the paramilitaries is growing thin, the government appears to be making little headway on a possible exchange deal, despite it taking a decidedly conciliatory approach. Indeed, in its latest attempt to kick start negotiations, the government is considering accepting an offer by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez to act as an intermediary. Bringing Chávez into the fold will put even more pressure on the FARC
