Re-building Ties With Nicaragua
September 2007 | Risk SummaryCosta Rican president Óscar Arias met with Nicaraguan counterpart, Daniel Ortega in August, in an effort to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries after years of non-cooperation. The main development was that the Bilateral Commission, established to encourage dialogue between the two countries, would resume work, after it was suspended in1997 in a dispute over navigational rights over the San Juan River. The meeting, which was the first since the Nicaraguan president returned to office in January, illustrates their keenness to put past struggles behind them, and should encourage a further strengthening of ties going
