Tightening Taiwan Ties

A visit by Taiwanese President Chen Shui-Bian in August provided occasion for Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega to promise a 'new era' in relations between the two countries. Nicaragua is one of the few countries that officially recognises Taipei rather than mainland China, and it appears as though that relationship is likely to persist. Perhaps helping matters is Ortega's request for US$400mn in investment from Taiwan - which, if it materialises, would provide significant incentive for continued bilateral
