Backing Taiwan
September 2007 | Ratings UpdateEl Salvador was among Taiwanese President Chen Shui-Bian's destinations on his nine-day trip in August to Central America. El Salvadorean President Tony Saca said that his country would support Taiwan's bid for membership in the United Nations - despite the opposition of China. As of the end of August, it was unclear what the quid-pro-quo for the El Salvadoreans would be (aside from a bilateral free trade pact), but we would expect some kind of trade and/or financial aid package to be in the works. In the meantime, the Taiwanese have promised to help promote the sale of El Salvadorean
