The election of Pedro Miguel Gonzalez as the president of the National Assembly has sparked tension between the US and Panama. The US believes that Gonzalez was complicit in the death of a US soldier in 1992, but he was acquitted by a Panamanian court of any involvement. Panamanian President Martin Torrijos said that the issue was a matter of domestic policy, and that pressure from Washington to prevent Gonzalez's election was 'speculation'.
