President Leonel Fernández called an extraordinary session in congress in July to debate exclusively on a social security reform law. The government wants to enact changes to the current regime's contribution costs for provision of insurance and welfare - an amendment which is likely to be met by stiff opposition among the country's business community. According to local media sources, up to 40 local businesses have already written to the Chamber of Deputies President Julio Valentin, asking to be involved in any consultations that take place.
