Opposition candidate Fernando Lugo, riding high on opinion polls giving him 60% support, has declared that he favours a constitutional amendment that would allow an incumbent president to run for re-election. This may reveal the ex-bishop's long-term ambitions, but in the immediate future, doubts still remain over whether he will win the exclusive backing of the opposition Concertación bloc. A united opposition will be essential if the ruling Partido Colorado's 60-year grip on power is to be challenged in next spring's residential
