With the general election expected in November, the government is under pressure to boost spending, with shortcomings in the provision of health and housing a recent focus of press and politicians. Although socio-economic indicators are improving, poverty and income inequality remain an issue and, with energy prices booming anew, Prime Minister Patrick Manning has little choice but to respond as he seeks re-election. Official budget spending for the fiscal year 2006/2007 will now be TTD41.0bn, up from TTD38.0bn originally. The extra allocation of TTD3.1bn is to meet additional public sector wage costs.
