Panama Approves FTA
August 2007 | Risk SummaryIn a step towards the approval of the bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) between the US and Panama, Panama's legislative assembly has voted by 58 votes to three in favour of the deal. The FTA, which has been amended to include stricter environmental and labour laws demanded by US Democrats, was signed in late June by both governments in Washington. With the Democrats signalling that they would be prepared to ratify the new treaty, we feel it is only a matter of time before a successful deal is reached. However, we do not expect this to happen before Congress goes
