Whither The FARC?
August 2007 | Ratings UpdateWith the countdown firmly on to October's regional elections, we are concerned that the ballot's legitimacy could be damaged by the lingering influence of insurgent groups in the country's peripheral states. According to Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos, a quarter of Colombia's municipalities could be at threat from intimidation and/or violence from the leftist paramilitary group the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC). Furthermore, the breakdown of the 'Justice and Peace' law could provoke a revival in Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) activity.
